| Costa Ricans are very nationalistic and proudly celebrate
their official holidays, called feriados. During some
holidays, the country virtually comes to a standstill and
many banks, public institutions, government and private offices
and stores close. Plan your activities around these holidays
and do not count on getting business of any kind done. In
fact, the whole country shuts down during Semana Santa
(the week before Easter) and the week between Christmas
and New Year's Day. San José turns into a pleasantly
quiet city as many Costa Rican families spend their holidays
at the beach. Asterisks indicate paid holidays and days for
workers.
