Costa Rican Consulates and Embassies Abroad

Costa Rican consulates provide information about visas, work permits, marriage and residency. They can issue tourist visas, authenticate documents and assist Costa Rican citizens living abroad.

Anyone seeking permanent residency in Costa Rica needs to have certain documents notarized by a Costa Rican consulate or embassy in their country of origin. Documents that must be notarized are a birth certificate, police certificate (stating you have no criminal record) and a proof of income statement. All this paperwork should be taken care of before coming to Costa Rica.

If you apply for permanent residency in Costa Rica, it may take months to get notarized documents from your home country, if it's possible at all. If worse comes to worst, you may have to make a trip home to take care of these matters. While you are waiting for papers from abroad, other documents may expire and you will have to start all over again. Bureaucracy is slow enough as it is in Costa Rica, and it is foolish to delay this process any more than necessary.

Each Costa Rican consulate has its own business hours and its area of coverage (jurisdiction) based on the origin of the document. Please locate your nearest consulate for personal attention. If there is no consulate in your state, locate the state or city nearest your residence in the list below.
